Program

🪔 Gajananam

Rāgam: Ahir Bhairavi
Tālam: Mishra Chāpu
Choreography: Shyamjit Kiran, Kalakshetra Alumni

Description:
Gajananam is a traditional invocatory piece dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of auspicious beginnings. Revered as the deity of wisdom, success, and intellect, Ganesha is worshipped before commencing any significant endeavor in Indian tradition.

Characterized by grace, rhythm, and devotion, this opening item marks the sacred beginning of the Arangetram. Through this piece, Niyathi seeks the divine blessings of Lord Ganesha, invoking his presence to guide the journey ahead and ensure the smooth unfolding of the performance.

🌸 Alarippu

Tālam: Tisra Triputa
Style: Traditional Repertoire

Description:
“Alarippu” translates to “flowering bud”, symbolizing the dancer’s physical and spiritual awakening. It is the traditional opening piece in a Bharatanatyam recital and sets the tone for what follows.

This purely rhythmic item is performed to the beats of the mridangam, without melodic accompaniment. It features intricate head, neck, eye, shoulder, and hand movements, gradually energizing the dancer and preparing the audience. Alarippu represents the dancer’s offering of body and soul to the artform and the divine.

🎶 Shabdam – Ayar Sheriyar

Rāgam: Ragamālika
Tālam: Mishra Chāpu
Style: Kalakshetra Repertoire

Description:
The Shabdam marks the introduction of abhinaya (expressive storytelling) in the Margam. Unlike earlier pieces that focus solely on rhythm and movement, the Shabdam weaves together dance and narrative.

In this composition, Lord Krishna is glorified as the divine cowherd — playful, charming, and deeply loved by the Gopis of Vrindavan. The dancer portrays Krishna’s divine allure, his mischievous nature, and his affectionate bond with the devotees, bringing out rich layers of devotion and expression through stylized gestures and emotive storytelling.

💃 Varnam – mātē malayadvaja pāṇḍya samjātē

Composer: H.N. Muttayyah Bhagavatar
Rāgam: Kamas
Tālam: Adi Tāla
Choreography: Tara Bikkasani

🔱 Keerthanam – Vidai Meedhil Pavani Vanthai

Ragam: Simhendramadhyamam
Talam: Roopaka

This is a Keerthanam taken from the dance drama Krishnamaari Kuravanji, choreographed by Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundel.
It beautifully captures the grandeur of Lord Shiva’s procession.

🙏Bhajan – Shri Ramachandra: Tulasi Dasa Bhajan

Rāgam: Yaman Kalyani
Tālam: Mishra Chāpu

💫 Thillana – Ragam Hindolam

Rāgam: Hindolam
